Brendan Sings :
Mary Woods she waved farewell
To her true love at the station
For Johnny and his brave young friends
They went to free small nations
And when the young men had all gone
To join the military
No workers left to take their place
So the old men called on Mary
Our country needs your help they said
For production must not falter
So Mary Woods worked day and night
So the old men could still prosper
In a deep dark trench on a moonless night
The silent gas came 'round him
Young Johnny took his final breath
And a white cross soon stood o'er him
Well Mary Woods she cried her fill
When the news she dreaded reached her
The old men said she must be brave
So she worked now all the harder
For four long years she worked and slaved
Til the war was finally ended
The young men returned and the old men said
Now Mary you're not wanted
This work's not fitting for a maid
And your freedom you may savour
You can cook and clean and sew a seam
And you'll win some young man's favour
Well I'll not leave this work she said
For I answered when you called me
And the soldiers who've returned from war
They will surely stand behind me
But no one stood with Mary Woods
And a young man he replaced her
The world went back to the way it was
And always has been ever
Now every year the men they march
To remember battles fought in
Their acts heroic they recall
But Mary Woods she is forgotten
Yes they wear their medals as they march
To remember battles fought in
Their acts heroic they recall
But Mary Woods she is forgotten
Mary Woods she is forgotten
