Clare O'Reilly
'He drank two farms'
my father said, nodding,
'Oh aye, and could have drunk one more
if he'd fallen in for his Uncle's place.'
I gasped and watched in awe
as Ned drank three sheep,
four pigs and a suckling calf
in front of my six year old eyes.
When he left the pint down
his moustache was magnolia cream
and I thought of sheep's wool.
All that was left of the home place,
ready to be licked away.
